Former Vice President Joe Biden has won South Carolina's Democratic primary, CNN projects, establishing himself as the main moderate rival to US Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Biden bet everything on South Carolina after anemic performances in the first three nominating states, and now he heads into Super Tuesday with momentum.
"Just days ago, the press and pundits had declared this candidacy dead," Biden said in a speech to his supporters. "Because of you, the heart of the Democratic Party, we just won and we won big because of you. We are very much alive."

As results were still coming in, billionaire businessman Tom Steyer announced Saturday that he was dropping out of the race. "I said if I didn't see a path to winning that I'd suspend my campaign," he said. "And honestly, I can't see a path where I can win the presidency."
