US Rep. Elijah Cummings, a longtime Maryland Democrat, died last week at the age of 68, and his death has prompted an outpouring of grief from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

On Thursday, Cummings laid in state at the US Capitol. It is thought to be the first time an African American has laid in state at the Capitol, according to congressional historians.

On Friday, former presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama joined other politicians in honoring Cummings at a funeral service in Baltimore.
