Melina grew up in Ann Arbor where her dad worked as an engineer for Ford. Now she, like a small but growing number of young people from the suburbs or other areas of Michigan, has moved to the city.
Melina, a bassist in the rock band the Dirtbombs, likes it for its strong sense of community. "You get a real connection to people," she said, "it's not just: What can this person do for me?"
Like many young artists she wants the city to succeed but appreciates its unpretentious air and working class feel.
