Sheriff says their office did not hear rumors of high school shooting beforehand

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said Tuesday night that their office did not hear any rumors about the shooting beforehand.

Bouchard cautioned against the spreading of rumors on social media and said the investigation into motive is still underway. He reiterated that there was still no information on a motive, particularly because the shooting suspect is currently not speaking to authorities.

The sheriff noted Tuesday that examining the suspect’s social media posts, including recent posts of the handgun recovered at the scene, are a part of their investigation.

Bouchard said sheriff deputy’s cars were dispatched at 12:52 p.m. on Tuesday and arrived at the school minutes later. Officials had the shooting suspect in custody within “two to three minutes” of their arrival, he said.

Bouchard said the suspect put his hands up when law enforcement officers approached. The suspect did not say anything when he was arrested, he added.

Two 15-round magazines were also found at the scene. Bouchard said it’s “more than likely” that a third magazine will be found, since there were allegedly three that were purchased. At least 12 rounds were fired, Bouchard said.

The crime scene is still being examined and the process is expected to go “all night long,” Bouchard said. He added that a cell phone was among the items seized at the suspect’s home.

Michigan victims include a 16-year-old boy who died on the way to the hospital, sheriff says

A 16-year-old boy, who was among three students killed at the shooting at Oxford High School, died in an Oakland Sheriff’s deputy’s car on the way to the hospital, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said.

The deputy loaded the teenager into his patrol car due to the “severity of the wounds” to bring him to the hospital, but “sadly that child died in the car,” Bouchard said.

All families have been notified. The names of the deceased students are as follows, per Bouchard:

  • Tate Myre, 16 (male)
  • Hana St. Juliana, 14 (female)
  • Madisyn Baldwin, 17 (female)

The eight people who were injured include seven students and one teacher. Per Bouchard, their details are as follows:

  • 15-year-old male in critical condition, gunshot wound to head.
  • 14-year-old male in serious condition, gunshot wounds to jaw and head.
  • 17-year-old female in stable condition, gunshot wound to neck.
  • 15-year-old male in stable condition, gunshot wound to left leg.
  • 17-year-old male in stable condition, gunshot wound to hip.
  • 47-year-old female teacher who was discharged from the hospital, had a wound on her left shoulder, appears to be a “grazing wound.”
  • 14-year-old female in critical condition, gunshot wounds to chest and neck. She is on a ventilator after surgery.
  • 17-year-old female in critical condition, gunshot wound to chest.

Bouchard said there were multiple other non-life-threatening injuries sustained by people as they were rushing out of the school. Most were treated and released at a staging area, he said.

Correction: An earlier version of this post misspelled the name of Hana St. Juliana.
