U.N. officials say approximately 600,000 people have been displaced from Rafah since May 6th because of Israel's ground operation. That's about a quarter of Gaza's population. In a statement today, the Israeli military says it engaged in, quote, "intense battles" in northern Gaza and targeted Hamas in parts of eastern Rafah. CNN spoke with American doctor Sameer Khan, who describes the dire conditions he's witnessed providing care near the southern Gaza City.

We have seen patients come in with acute trauma injuries, last wounds, gunshot wounds, crush injuries. We've been running short on medical supplies and it's just extreme poverty. The system is is essentially crippled.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military released drone footage geolocated by CNN that shows armed men at a United Nations facility in southern Gaza. They're calling on the U.N. to investigate. The main UN agency operating in Gaza says it's, quote, "likely" that the video shows its warehouse that was evacuated last week. It says it's, quote, "unable to verify the authenticity or the content" in the video, but condemned any use of its facilities for, quote, "military fighting purposes."

Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico underwent surgery today after being shot multiple times in an assassination attempt, according to officials. Slovakian ministers say it was politically motivated and blamed rising hate speech and division for the political atmosphere in the country. In a statement, President Joe Biden condemned the, quote, "horrific acts of violence." He said the US government is in touch with the government of Slovakia and is ready to assist. Fico won a third term as Slovakia's prime minister last year and as a controversial figure there. He was forced to resign from his last term in 2018 after weeks of mass protest over the murder of an investigative journalist and his fiancee. He's also a vocal supporter of the Kremlin and a critic of the European Union.

The House has passed a major federal aviation bill. The Senate passed the bill last week, and it now goes to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. The legislation renews the Federal Aviation Administration's authority for five years, and some of its key provisions include hiring more air traffic controllers, improving runway safety and passenger protections such as requiring automatic airline refunds.

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy testified in front of Congress today about the deadly collapse of Baltimores Francis Scott Key Bridge in March. The bridge was hit by the cargo ship daily, killing six construction workers. Homendy says the NTSB has found the valley experienced two blackouts while moored in the port of Baltimore the day before the crash.

While recovering from the second blackout, the crew switched to a different transformer instead of breakers from those that had been in use for several months. Switching breakers is not unusual, but may have affected operations the very next day. On the accident voyage.

She went on to describe the ship as, quote, "essentially drifting" before crashing into the bridge. The NTSB initial findings will be part of a final report that could take investigators up to two years to finish. According to the Federal Highway Administration administrator, a replacement bridge is estimated to open in 2028 and cost about $1.8 billion.

Coming up, drug overdose deaths decline.

00:03:37
Drug overdose deaths in the U.S. have gone down for the first time in five years, according to preliminary data. The CDC data shows deaths ticked down about 3% in 2023, but estimates suggest overdose deaths last year were still almost twice as high as they were five years ago. Preliminary data is subject to change as death certificates are reviewed and records are assessed. Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids drove overdose deaths to record levels in recent years, and they continue to account for the majority of those deaths last year, though, the new data shows there were about 1500 fewer deaths caused by fentanyl and other synthetic opioids last year than in 2022. But Americans are still losing loved ones to overdoses that, quote, "staggering numbers.".
