Former House Speaker Paul Ryan will serve as a guest lecturer at the University of Notre Dame where he will be part of the faculty.
The university announced the news Monday, saying in a release that Ryan will be a guest lecturer for political science and economics during the 2019-2020 academic year.
Ryan retired from Congress at the end of its last session after serving as a Republican representative for Wisconsin’s first congressional district and the 54th House speaker. The news that he is joining the faculty at Notre Dame is the latest indication of his next moves now that he is no longer on Capitol Hill.
“As an Irish Catholic from the Midwest, the University of Notre Dame has always held a special place in my heart,” Ryan said in a statement included in the release.
“As much as I hope to impart as a lecturer, I know that I will learn a tremendous amount from Notre Dame’s remarkable students as we discuss the big challenges before our nation and collaborate on how best to address them,” he added.
Ryan has kept a relatively low profile since leaving Congress, but was back in the headlines last month when he joined the board of directors at Fox Corporation, the parent company of Fox News.
Ryan was frequently described as a Republican Party rising star during his early years in Congress, but faced a high level of scrutiny from Democrats and Republicans alike over his relationship with President Donald Trump and the two clashed at times with Trump in the White House.
Ryan tweeted last month in support of the President, saying “we’re clearly better off because of @RealDonaldTrump,” and adding that the President’s “record of accomplishment is why he’ll win re-election especially when compared to Dems’ leftward lurch.”
