(CNN) -- The men competing in this weekend's Ryder Cup between Europe and America may grab the attention of the world's media, but the players' wives have always had a role to play in this competition.

Unlike in many other sports, the wives of the world's top golfers have always been welcome at the biennial event, providing support and companionship to their battle-weary husbands.

Although their appearance may have altered over time, the tradition of the women's presence at the contest has remained constant, as has the level of enthusiasm and support they show their other halves.
