Sen. Rand Paul to hold announcement event in Louisville

CNN  —

Sen. Rand Paul, who’s long been preparing for a presidential run, is scheduled to make an announcement at Louisville’s historic Galt House Hotel in early April.

Two sources close to the Kentucky senator confirm the Kentucky Republican will hold an event on April 7. While it’s widely expected Paul will run for president, the event is still three weeks away and the sources wouldn’t confirm Paul’s decision.

Stephen Huffman, a Kentucky GOP executive committee member from Lexington, said he received a verbal invitation from Paul’s team to attend an April 7 event at the hotel, which overlooks the Ohio River.

“It’s not everyday a Kentucky U.S. senator announces a run for the presidency,” Huffman said. “Should be a historic day for the commonwealth.”

The senator has been hitting the trail for a year and his political team has been active behind the scenes organizing a network that will help him hit the ground running as soon as he announces.

In the week after the event, Paul will make an early voting state tour to Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and South Carolina, according to a source familiar with his travel plans. Paul is also scheduled to go to New Hampshire this week for a two-day swing Friday and Saturday, his second trip to the first-in-the-nation primary state this year.

The venue was first reported by the Lexington Herald-Leader and the date was first reported by The New York Times.

The early April date marks a convenient time for a presidential hopeful who currently holds an office on Capitol Hill. April 7 falls during the March 30-April 10 Senate recess and comes at the start of the second quarter fundraising period, which won’t require reports until after the end of June.
