India train crash kills at least 250

August 20, 1995

NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- In one of India's most horrific train disasters, at least 250 people were killed Sunday when two passenger trains collided.

According to news reports, the accident occurred when one train, the Kalindi Express, hit a cow on the tracks some 125 miles from New Delhi. Its brakes damaged, the train stopped, only to be plowed from behind by the Purshottam Express.

In addition to the 250 people reported dead, at least 200 others have been injured. Troops have been pressed into relief work in an attempt to rescue victims from the debris.

According to the Press Trust of India (PTI), three cars of the Kalindi Express were devastated. Two carriages and the engine of the Purshottam Express were thrown off the tracks.

The railways form a crucial transport service across the vast Indian subcontinent, and accidents are not uncommon. Still, this marks the most severe train tragedy since 1989, said PTI. In that year, the Quilon Express plunged into a river in Kerala, killing 107.
