School bus struck by semi; driver killed

crash scene

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (CNN) -- A school bus that failed to stop or yield at an intersection was struck broadside by a tractor-trailer rig Tuesday, killing the bus driver and injuring about 20 of the 30 children aboard, police said.

Rescue personnel had to free children trapped in the bus after the accident, which happened around 8:30 a.m. on the city's west side. The children's injuries included bumps, bruises and possible broken bones, police said. Hospitals reported at least 10 of the children were critically or seriously hurt, but police said none of the injuries appeared life threatening.

It was snowing at the time of the accident, and there were a couple inches of snow on the ground, but police said neither was believed to be a factor in the accident

Randy Griswold, who arrived at the scene shortly after the crash, said the left side of the driver's cab was demolished and the driver "wound up curled up like a ball in the stairwell. ... It's a scene you can't describe." Griswold's 6-year-old daughter, who was on the bus, suffered minor injuries.

Bullet mix-up slows Jordan murder trial

Daniel Andre Green

LUMBERTON, North Carolina (CNN) -- Mislabeled bullets and a missing witness delayed proceedings Monday in the trial of the man accused of killing Michael Jordan's father.

Daniel Andre Green, 21, is on trial on charges of murder and armed robbery in the 1993 slaying of James Jordan, 57, father of the Chicago Bulls basketball star.

Medical examiner Joel Sexton testified he removed a .38-caliber bullet from Jordan's chest, but he told prosecutors the bullet they presented in court for him to identify was the wrong size. Out of the jury's presence, court officials determined the correct bullet had been mixed up with one from a robbery that Green and Larry Martin Demery, who has pleaded guilty to Jordan's murder, are accused of committing shortly before Jordan was killed.

District Attorney Johnson Britt will be allowed to call witnesses to explain the mix-up to the jury.

Later, a dentist who was to testify about James Jordan's dental records failed to show up. Judge Gregory Weeks then adjourned Monday's court session an hour early.

Ambulance plane crashes near Spokane airport, killing 3

crash scene

SPOKANE, Washington (CNN) -- An ambulance plane transporting a critically ill patient to a hospital in thick fog struck an industrial building as it tried to land at Spokane International Airport, killing three of the four passengers, including the patient.

The twin-engine Cessna 401 crashed into the side of a petroleum storage tank manufacturer about a half-mile from the airport runway, causing a massive fire and several explosions. No one was inside the warehouse.

The cause of Monday night's crash of the Aero-Med flight -- which killed the patient, pilot and a nurse -- wasn't immediately known, and authorities were unsure if fog contributed, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Larry Richards.

Witnesses told reporters they heard a loud explosion, followed by calls for help. The lone survivor, paramedic Harold Livingston Jr., 24, suffered broken bones and extensive burns and was listed in serious condition.
