But for his lamp to become popular, he had to design an entire electrical system to power it. Edison invented a direct current (DC) system, but it had drawbacks. It featured five “solar trees” which used 3D printed OPV modules to store solar energy in the day to power the pavilion at night. \n “We used very flexible, very thin and lightweight films,” says Lennart Wiechell, managing partner of Schmidhuber, the firm that designed the pavilion. “With this type of panel, you are more flexible, and you can integrate them more easily into existing buildings.”"}},{"type":"text","style":"heading","text":{"en":"From Expos to real-world applications","ar":"من معارض إكسبو إلى العالم الحقيقي"}},{"type":"text","style":"paragraph","text":{"en":"Although the energy from the solar trees was not enough to fully power Germany’s pavilion, Wiechell says it showcased a new approach to generating energy from urban spaces. \n “We have to think about more possibilities to integrate solar into cities, into the buildings, into the parks,” he says. \n For the upcoming World Expo in Dubai this year, Grimshaw Architects has designed The Sustainability Pavilion. At the 2010 Expo in Shanghai, 196 fuel-cell vehicles moved visitors around the 523-hectare site. \n These technologies are still in development and many are currently too expensive for applications outside big events.
