Princess Diana

I have it on very good authority that the quest for perfection our society demands can leave the individual gasping for breath at every turn.

That woman talking, that's Princess Diana. Can you believe it? I mean, I know it's probably obvious to some of you, but I was surprised. I was really surprised to hear that this royal woman, this global celebrity, talks about herself like she's just another normal person trying to fit in. And it also just gets me thinking all the time, like, what do we actually know about her? Or What do we think we know?
Woman 1
00:00:42
Everyone wanted to look like her.
Woman 2
00:00:44
I just always kind of wondered why she looked so sad.

The answer really depends on who you ask.
Woman 3
00:00:50
She is a hottie.
Woman 4
00:00:53
My wedding dress, I thought it was perfect because it looked a lot like Diana's.
00:00:57
My mum, especially, and her friends were talking about that or whatever was happening. So in my mind I just thought it's just one of the aunties who was like an auntie, and eventually I would meet her.

"What do you think princesses do all day?" "Maybe they just fly around and eat potato chips."

And honestly, in my household in West Africa, she wasn't Princess Diana. She was just Diana, someone who we knew, like, you know, a cousin who had been promised a fairytale that didn't just quite pan out. I'm Aminatou Sow, host of When Diana Met... A new podcast from CNN. Yes, this is a show about Princess Diana and the moment she came face to face with people that would change her life, but it's really also a show about us, about how our perceptions of celebrity reveal more about ourselves than whatever powerful person we're looking at. Listen, as we throw all the usual Diana tropes out the window and we examine her story in light of how we now think about power, how we think about women, how we think about media and the people who make it. When Diana Met... is available wherever you listen to podcasts.
