About

Mariano Castillo is an editor on The Row, CNN’s story-vetting, and editorial oversight team. He works with CNN en Español in this role.

Mariano joined CNN in 2009 as a digital journalist, focusing on Latin America.

From Atlanta, Mariano covered stories including the rescue of the Chilean miners, the genocide trial of former Guatemalan dictator Efrain Rios Montt and how the US immigration court system handles unaccompanied minors.

A 2016 project examining the immigration crisis in the Dominican Republic was the result of a reporting trip to the D.R. and Haiti.

Prior to CNN, Mariano was a correspondent for the San Antonio Express-News based along the U.S.-Mexico border. He has also worked with The Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times.

In 2017, the Latin American Studies Association recognized Mariano with the LASA Media Award for long-term journalistic contributions to Latin American coverage. He is also part of the community of Paul & Daisy Soros Fellows.

Mariano studied at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs, but you’re more likely to see him wearing the colors of his other alma mater, Texas A&M.
