U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur has lost her first match since winning in New York, going down in three sets to Russian Maria Kirilenko in the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.
Australian Stosur had beaten Kirilenko en route to her grand slam victory, with the pair playing out the longest tie-break in women’s grand slam history.
However, Kirilenko got her revenge over the sixth seed on Tuesday, reaching the third round with a 6-2 4-6 6-4 success.
“Every time you win a grand slam, it’s tough to play next tournament and I had a feeling that I would have a chance today. I just took that chance,” Kirlenko told reporters.
Stosur added: “I think the difference was she stayed mentally very strong from the first point to the last point, while I was kind of up and down.”
In other matches, world number one Caroline Wozniacki launched the defense of her title with a hard-fought 6-1 6-7 6-3 victory over Australian Jarmila Gajdosova.
Meanwhile, Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova is also through after a 6-2 6-3 win over Mandy Minella of Luxembourg and she remains on course for a potential quarterfinal against Maria Sharapova.
Third seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus saw off Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania 6-1 6-3, while fourth seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia defeated Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 7-5 6-0.
There were also victories for ninth seedAgnieszka Radwanska of Poland and 13th seed Julia Goerges of Germany.
