What's open, closed during partial government shutdown

Amtrak:

Would continue operating.

Courts, prisons:

Federal prisons would continue normal operation. Federal courts would remain open, but most civil cases would be postponed.

Defense:

All active duty personnel would report for duty. Many Defense Department civilian employees would stay on the job. Military recruitment offices would be closed.

Mail:

Deliveries as usual

Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security:

Checks issued, but new applications won't be processed.

National Weather Service:

Open.

Passport offices:

Closed.

Public health:

Meat inspectors remain on the job.

Tourism:

National park visitor centers and monuments would be closed. Visitors would still have access to many parks and battlefields, but without the usual services. All Smithsonian museums in Washington and New York would close, as would the National Zoo in Washington.

Transportation:

Air traffic controllers, railway inspectors and the Coast Guard would continue to work.

U.S. border:

Border patrols and immigration officials would remain on duty.

Veterans:

Disability benefit checks as usual. Hospitals and clinics open. But no new applications for veterans benefits would be accepted.

Welfare:

Checks and food stamps would be issued as usual.
