(CNN) -- What do you do if you're searching for the airport meditation zone but you can't speak a word of English? If you're traveling through Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, you can be sure they'll be a handy pictogram to help you.

Every year, over 50 million travelers rely on Schiphol's distinctive signage to navigate its sprawling network of departure gates, plazas and lounge centers.

Developed over the course of 25 years by Dutch visual information designer Paul Mijksenaar and his team, many of the simple icons have been exported all over the world from New York's JFK airport to the Olbia Costa Smeralda airport in Sardinia.
